Minister James Lawless TD Launches New Tertiary Degree in Agricultural Science Delivered by LMETB in Partnership with UCD

Posted: 15 June, 2026

The BAgrSc (Hons) in Agricultural Science is a new addition to the Tertiary Bachelor’s Degree programme for the 2026/2027 academic year, providing an innovative pathway into one of Ireland’s most important sectors. Students will commence their studies with the first year at Dunboyne College of Further Education before progressing seamlessly to University College Dublin (UCD) for a further four years to complete the Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Honours) degree. This new route offers students an alternative pathway to higher education, without the traditional points barriers, while maintaining the same academic standards and graduate outcomes as the direct-entry degree programme.

Designed to support the future needs of Ireland’s agri-food industry, the programme combines the supportive learning environment of Further Education with a clear progression route to one of the country’s leading agricultural science degrees. Students will benefit from smaller class sizes and student-focused learning during their first year in Dunboyne College, before transitioning to UCD to continue their studies and develop the scientific, technical and practical skills required for careers across agriculture, food production, sustainability, environmental management and agribusiness.

The new Agricultural Science Tertiary Bachelor’s Degree pathway reflects the continued expansion of the tertiary education model, which is coordinated through the National Tertiary Office and aims to broaden access to higher education while addressing key skills needs across the economy. By enabling students to begin their studies locally, with no tuition fees during their year with Dunboyne College, the programme provides a flexible and accessible route to a Level 8 honours degree and supports the development of the next generation of professionals for Ireland’s agricultural sector.
